Benazir Shot Dead

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
FORMER PAKISTAN prime minister Benazir Bhutto was assassinated on Thursday in a suicide attack shortly after a political rally in Rawalpindi's Liagat Bagh. Bhutto, 54, suffered bullet wounds to her neck and head. She was declared dead in hospital. Thirty other people died in the attack, almost all victims of the suicide bomber who pushed through the security cordon on a bicycle. He blew himself up immediately after shooting Benazir "The man first fired at her vehicle. She ducked and then he blew himself up," said police officer Mohammad Shahid. She collapsed inside her Toyota Land Cruiser, which pulled out of the melee and drove to RawalpindiGeneralHospita1nearby She is believed to have died of excessive bleeding and heart failure.

"We have been robbed of a great leader and a symbol of courage and determination," said Farahnaz Ispahani, a woman member of Bhutto's party Benazir's husband, Asif Zardari, who rushed to Pakistan from Dubai (where he lives), said it was a targeted attack. Benazir became the first woman prime minister in the Muslim world when she was elected in 1988 at the age of 35. She was deposed by President Ghulam Ishaq Khan in 1990, reelected in 1993, and ousted again in 1996 amid charges of corruption and mismanagement. She said the charges were politically motivated but in 1999 chose to stay in exile rather than face them. The fatal attack took place at the main gate of Liagat Bagh, one of the major public parks in Rawalpindi, the garrison town next to Islamabad. After her return from self-exile two months ago, her political convoy was bombed in Karachi. In that incident as well, shots were fired at her van.

On Thursday afternoon, Benazir completed her speech well ahead of the sunset deadline that the election commission had set for political rallies. As her vehicle was leaving the ground, the suicide bomber struck. In her speech, Benazir spoke of the risks she faced. "I put my life in danger and came here because I feel this country is in danger People are worried. We will bring the country out of this crisis," she told the rally It was a promise that she was unable to keep. People cried, hugged each other and shouted anti-Musharraf slogans outside the hospital where she died.

Largest temple no stranger to controversy

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Temple authorities voice concern over the height of buildings at proposed Games Village.

THE SPRAWLING Akshardham temple prominently visible from National Highway-24 (NH-24), has been mired in controversy right from the planning stage. It has drawn huge protests from environmentalists who were against such a large structure on the Yamuna riverbed. The temple complex constructed by Bochasanwasi Sri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) was pushed at the behest of a senior BJP leader even though the riverbed was then a no-construction zone. To justify the construction, the riverbed was declared "O" zone under the master plan in 2001, much to the chagrin of the green brigade. Changing the land use meant that public and semi-public construction could come up on the riverbed. Another controversy errupted regarding the chunk of land allotted. Normally a temple is allotted only a 400 square metre of plot. But, changing all rules of land allotment, the Delhi Development Authority allot- ted a whopping 30 acres of land for Akshardham complex. Further, quoting Akshardham's example, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) justified sanction for construction of the Commonwealth Games village next to the temple. Environmentalist have been opposing the construction of the Commonwealth Games village saying that..

Parsi fire temple to celebrate anniversary

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
HIDDEN BEHIND the canopy of huge neem trees is a pristine place of worship, the Parsi fire temple called Kaikhushru Pallonji Katrak Dar-e-Meher, which celebrates its 47th anniversary on Thursday As one enters the Delhi Parsi Anjuman premises, which houses this unique place of worship, a sense of peace and tranquility engulfs the visitor However, one is allowed to enter the Dar-e-Meher (different from Atesh Behram or even an Agiary, both being bigger fire temples) only if one is a Zorostrian. The ritual prayers to the fire are held five times a day whilst remembering the great saints and kings of Iran. The sacred fire is fed with 'special' wood during this prayer and also on special occasions. The Parsis, who came to India in the 14th century to save their religion and preserve the sanctity and purity of their sacred fire, ensure that the fire is kept burning all the while. "The community has just about 700 members in Delhi and the NCR and occasions like the anniversary of the fire temple gives a chance for all of us to come to- gether," said Dadi Mistry, the president of Delhi Parsi Anjuman. The simple-yet-attractive monument with Zorostrian motifs is one of its kinds in the entire north India. "The other nearest fire temples are at Kanpur and Ajmer and this makes the fire temple in Delhi even more special," added Mistry with a touch of pride in his voice. Compared to the Delhi Parsi Anjuman, which was formed 75 years ago, and the Parsi graveyard here, which is almost 116 years old, the fire temple was consecrated quite late but it has nevertheless helped strengthen and preserve the already strong rituals..

Class 8 kids shoot classmate in school

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
AN American-style campus shooting, two students of a private school in Gurgaon shot dead a classmate as he was about to take the schoolbus home, police said on Tuesday Abhishek Tyagi, a class VIII student of Euro International School in Sector 45, was shot five times from close range on his forehead, chest and shoulder inside the campus. The 14-year-old was declared dead at a private hospital. Police identified the two boys as Akash Yaday, 14, and Vikas Ya- day, 13. They said Akash had brought his father's licensed foreign-made pistol and both boys took turns to shoot Abhishek. The two boys told the police that Abhishek allegedly used to bully them at school because he was of better build. About five days ago, they had a fight and school authorities had intervened and settled the matter. But the two said Abhishek had threatened to kill them. "Before Abhishek could act, Akash brought his father's pistol, which used to be kept unguarded, and hid it in the school toilet. After school (around 2 p.m.), Akash retrieved the pistol and fired at Abhishek," said Mohinder Lal, Gurgoan's commissioner of police. The police said the two boys called out Abhishek from the bus and shot him a few feet away School staff overpowered the two boys and locked them in a room before calling the police. "I was at a different school when the incident took place. As soon as I got information I rushed to the school," said the school's chairman Satyavir Yaday. The police said Akash's father, a property dealer, acted irresponsibly by keeping the pistol unlocked in a TV trolley Gun vio- lence among schoolchildren in India is rare. The case, possibly the first reported in and around Delhi, recalls the situation in the US, where rights activists are campaigning for tougher gun laws to control the problem. DCP Satish Balan said: "We might charge Akash's father under the arms act for reckless handling of weapons." None of the two boys' family members have turned up after the shooting. Vikas's father is also a property dealer Abhishek's father Ravindra Tyagi, a transporter, was too shocked to comment. PLANNED, COLD-BLOODED MURDER 14-YEAR-0LD HID GUN IN SCHOOL TOILET 1 Before leaving for school, Akash takes out his father's pistol kept in a TV trolley and slips it into his schoolbag. He carries it to school. 2 After reaching school, he goes to the toilet before class and hides the pistol there. He does this possibly to avoid suspicion of classmates. 3 After School, Akash and Vikas call out Abbishek from his schoolbus parked inside the school campus. They fire five times at him. Abbishek is declared dead at a hospital.

Hospital shocker in Gurgaon

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
AN ALLEGED goof up by the nursing staff of the state-run Civil Hospital in Gurgaon led a pregnant lady to deliver her baby in the lawns of the hospital on Sunday evening. The new born died in the absence of expert care, the woman's husband alleged.

The hospital authorities have instituted an in-house enquiry into the matter and have promised to take stern actions against the guilty .

"My wife went into labour at about 2.00 pm on Sunday and I rushed her to Civil Hospital at about 3.00pm. The nursing staff initially admitted her and started diagnosing. Immediately after examining my her, the staff told us to go to some other hospital, preferably to some private hospital in Gurgaon or Delhi," Sundri's husband, Mangla, said.

He claimed that the attending nursing staff gave conflicting versions on his wife's condition. "Someone said the baby was in a serious condition, while others said the baby was probably stillborn. I then brought my wife to the hospital lawns where I left her to look for some transport to take her to another hospital. In the meantime she delivered the baby, who died within a few minutes, added Mangla.

Fresh graves found in Nandigram

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
FIVE FRESH graves were found by the CRPF at a deserted spot in Nandigram on Wednesday even as the West Bengal government moved a petition in the Supreme Court, challenging the Calcutta High Court judgment indicting the state administration for "unjustified" firing on innocent people on March 14.

The state government described the November 16 high court verdict on the alleged excesses of the state police as a "premature conclusion" arrived at without without properly evaluating the evidence on record. The state government said the high court should not have passed strictures against it.

The petition argued that the high court's finding of unconstitutionality had pre-judged and foreclosed the entire issue and would bind the CBI, thereby rendering the inquiry infructuous.

The state also took objection to the high court "summarily" deciding the quantum of compensation without appointing a committee to ascertain the nature, extent and cause of the injuries sustained by each of the victims.

The high court had directed the state administration to pay compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the families of each of the 14 people killed.

In Nandigram's Khejuri area, the discovery of the graves beside a road fuelled speculation that they were dug for persons killed by CPI(M) cadre in Sonachura on November 10. Some villagers, however, claimed that the graves were those of half-burnt and mutilated bodies of CPM cadres killed while they were making bombs in Sher Khan Chowk on October 28.

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
TWO CALL centre employees have been arrested for allegedly duping several people of money by sending them fraudulent emails claiming they had won an online lottery, south district police said. The accused, Prashant and Abhay, have allegedly duped more than 10 gullible people. They work in call centres in Karol Bagh and Gurgaon and were friends. Police got on their trail after Manoj Kumar Sauguna, a victim of the fraud, complained that he had deposited about Rs 1.47 lakh in an unknown bank account after receiving an e-mail that stated he had won a million pounds in an online lottery, police said. Sauguna deposited the money but soon became suspicious after reading press reports about rising e-mail fraud, police said. "Sauguna told us he was asked to pay Rs. 2 lakh as processing fees and tax, before the promised award could be transferred to his account. He deposited Rs. 1.47 lakh," said Anil Shukla, DCP (South). Buddha seeks 'enemy' BJP's support on Gorkha law, calls on Advani

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
ANXIOUS TO avoid opening a new front after Nandigram, the CPI(M) on Monday night reached out to arch foe BJP for help on another sensitive issue: Gorkha autonomy West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee went calling on Leader of Opposition L.K. Advani, seeking BJP support for two Constitution amendment bms meant to upgrade the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council into an autonomous body A bill to amend the constitution cannot be passed without the support of two-thirds of members present and voting in parliament. The backing of the BJP is, therefore, crucial. Buddha spent 30 minutes at Advani's home trying to mollify the veteran BJP leader whose party upset with the Centre's attempt to bring the bills without adequate notice and consultation - had turned down Home Minister Shivraj Patil's request for support. Buddha told Advani his government wanted the law fast because the Darjeeling hills had begun to see a violent revival of the demand for a separate Gorkha

'Caesarean babies have lower immunity levels

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
CAESAREAN BABIES have lower levels of immunity compared to babies born normally, said Dr Allan Walker, Prof of Nutrition and Paediatrics, Harvard Medical School. Dr Walker was here to attend the first India Probiotics Symposium organised by the National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (ICMR). In an interview to the Hindustan Times, he said: "Not having passed through the vaginal tract like normal babies during birth, Caesarean babies have fewer friendly bacteria (pro biotics) in their bodies.

This leads to an immature immune system, higher susceptibility to allergy, infection and diseases like Type I diabetes." "In the womb, the baby is free of bacteria, most of the good bacteria the baby needs for its immunity it gets is during the process of normal delivery from the vaginal tract and mother's colon," Dr Walker said. In experiments on mice in which some were taken out of the womb by cutting it open, hundred per cent of the mice got diabetes - an auto-immune disease.
