Two days after the United States embassy in New Delhi, posted a message on its website, warning citizens of high threat of terrorism across, the Indian government reacted sharply asserting that India was absolutely safe.

The Ministry of External Affairs directed the Indian embassy in Washington DC to take up the matter with the Obama administration.

“Ambassador Meera Shankar has been asked to give her personal attention to this matter, to ensure that the message is removed,” a source told Hindustan Times.

Another Indian student attacked in Australia

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
If you are an Indian wanting to study in Australia, take note: a 25-year-old Indian student has become the latest victim of a racist attack even as another battled for life in hospital after being attacked over the weekend.

Indian student Baljinder Singh begged for his life as he was stabbed with a screwdriver by his amused attackers after leaving a Melbourne railway station, the heraldsun website reported.

As Baljinder screamed for his life on Monday night, his attackers laughed and fled, the report said. “I bent down and one guy stabbed me…I just wanted to save my life and yelled just don’t kill me.”

Red flag up, but UPA may push ahead

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
In the face of the Left's unrelenting opposition to the India-US nuclear deal, the Congress, in a major shift of stance, is seriously evaluating the political fallout of sewing up the India-specific safeguards agreement with the IAEA without their consent.

The postponement of the schedu1ed UPA-Left meeting on the issue on Wednesday saw hectic consultations in both camps. After being closeted with Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon and Union Minister Kapil Sibal, a member of the panel for nuclear talks, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee conferred with Congress president Sonia Gandhi. Others present at the meeting were Defence Minister A.K. Antony and Sonia's political secretary Ahmed Patel.

Congress sources confirmed to Hindustan Times the possibility of the government signing the agreement despite the Communists' rigid opposition. But the final call would be taken after the UPA-Left committee meeting now slated on June 25.

The urgency in the government's moves was explained to the tight deadlines for completing the next three stages in the deal: the IAEA safeguards pact, the NSG waiver and the up and down vote in the US Congress on the 123 agreement. There was some relief, however, after the US State Department's public assurance that Washington would push for the deal till January 20, the day the new President would take oath in that country.

Torch passes in peace, Delhi pays the price

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
The Indian government and Delhi Police ended Thursday with a sigh of relief, but Delhi was gasping for breath long after the Olympic flame had left for its next destination, Bangkok.

With a staggering 17,000 policemen and commandos swarming the heart of New Delhi, the torch completed its 2.3 km journey down Rajpath that had been sanitised from even the somnolent babus of the many sarkari buildings around.

The widely feared Tibetan protests were largely non-violent; the police still arrested as many as 267 people for trying to disrupt the run.

"No protester could manage to breach security anywhere in the city," Rajan Bhagat, Delhi Police spokesman, announced at the end of the day "All attempts to create trouble were thwarted."

In fact, all of Delhi was thwarted.
