Win hearts of Tamils, Lankan prez tells troops

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
At Wednesday's national victory parade to celebrate the defeat of the LTTE, it was difficult to say which was more martial in nature — the military hardware on display or President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s speech which had a liberal sprinkling of victory, defeat, terrorists, terrorism and motherland.

“Terrorists are no more invincible. It is only you, the valiant troops and our Motherland that are invincible. I recently went down on my knees and worshipped the glorious motherland that obtained its freedom through the sacrifice of the lives of thousands of our heroic troops,’’ Rajapaksa said.

He told troops that it was now time to win over the hearts of the Tamils who should be able to live without “fear and mistrust”.

Blast at mosque in Lanka

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
A suicide bomber triggered explosives amid a gathering of Muslims celebrating Milad-un-Nabi, killing 14 and wounding 40 more including a minister in the southern Sri Lankan town of Akuressa on Tuesday .

The condition of several among the injured, including that of minister Mahinda Wijesekera, was said to be serious. Wijesekera was flown to a hospital in Colombo from Akuressa, some 150-odd km from the capital. The death toll is expected to rise.

The LTTE did not claim responsibility but the suicide attack bore all the trademarks of one carried out by the Tamil Tigers, now cornered in a sliver of land in the north-eastern district of Mullaitivu.

Dropped from Irani Cup, could be the end for Dada

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Unless the new selection committee committee thinks radically differently Souray Ganguly's omission from the Irani Cup squad could start the most remarkable phaseout period in the history of Indian cricket.

Is it time to say goodbye to Indian cricket legends who contributed to 17 Test victories abroad between November 2000 when Ganguly became captain and 2008 compared to 14 from 1932 to 2000? It's just that the process to shelve them has started with Ganguly, India's most successful captain with 21 wins in 49 Tests.

"You have to look at the future and start somewhere," a national selector unwilling to go on record told HT. "We have a pool of youngsters who are ready to be tested and this is the right time." Ganguly made 96 runs in six innings in Sri Lanka last month.

Skipper Dhoni may skip Lanka Test

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Mahendra Singh Dhoni could be the first Indian cricketer to pull out of a tour citing fatigue. The India ODI skipper, it was learnt late on Monday, had conveyed this to the BCCI.

Earlier, asked whether he would opt out of the Sri Lanka tour, where the first of the three-Test series begins on July 23, Dhoni said: "You will get to know it in the next couple of days."

Make what you will of that but remember Dhoni had a similar answer to the question after India were annihilated by Sri Lanka in Sunday's Asia Cup final in Karachi. Also remember that he had, during the Asia Cup, raised the issue of international cricket's gruelling schedule.

On Monday, he also appreciated an earlier statement from the BCCI that a player could rest when he felt the need for it. "In the sub-continent we have a full year of cricket and there's no off-season. It's tough for cricketers. When we want rest we should get it," he said. "The BCCI has said we can take rest whenever we want which, I think, is a very good policy" he said.

The birthday boy - he turned 27 on Monday said he was "100 per cent ht". Playing non-stop since India's ODI series against South Africa in June 2007, it is possible that Dhoni would opt out of the Tests and take over for the five ODIs, beginning August 18.
