Shortly after noon on Tuesday, the “skinny guy with a funny name,” Barack Hussein Obama, was sworn in as the 44th president of the United States, becoming the first African-American to hold the office.
Taking the oath of office “amidst gathering clouds and raging storms,” he told his countrymen “we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and begin again the work of remaking America.”
“What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility, a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation, and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly,” he said.
The ceremony on the west front of the U.S. Capitol was watched by hundreds of thousands of people — many overcome with emotion
