Pakistan sees al Qaeda hand behind Christian killings

Islamist militants from groups linked to al Qaeda and the Taliban are suspected of being behind the mob violence that killed eight Christians in central Pakistan over the weekend, a senior government official said on Tuesday.

Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan, an outlawed pro-Taliban Sunni Muslim sectarian group, and its al Qaeda-linked offshoot, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), were suspected of orchestrating the attack in Gojra town, according to Rana Sanaullah, Punjab's law minister.

Incensed by unsubstantiated allegations that the Koran had been desecrated by a Christian, an angry mob torched dozens of houses in the town on Saturday,

Twin blasts rock Iraq, 76 killed

Two suicide bombers wearing vests stuffed with explosives blew themselves up in separate attacks in Iraq on Thursday, killing 76 people.

Shortly after the two attacks, the authorities in Baghdad said they had arrested the purported leader of an Al Qaeda afmiated insurgent group, Abu Omar al-Baghdadi.

One of the attacks occurred in a crowded restaurant at lunchtime near Muqdadiya, 80 km northeast of Baghdad.
