Dhoni earns most: Forbes

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
You've seen him running in his Reeboks and quenching his thirst with a Pepsi. And by doing so and playing some cricket matches too Mahendra Singh Dhoni has raked in a cool $10 million (Rs 48 crore) in the past year?

Dhoni tops the Forbes' list of 10 top-earning cricketers in the world, with Sachin Tendulkar coming second with $8 million (Rs 38.4 crore). The list figures three other Indians Yuvraj Singh, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly (see box).

The list was prepared taking into account a cricketer's income from his IPL franchisee, from the national team and from commercial endorsements over the last 12 months.

You’ve always been my hero

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Like my first meeting with Sunil Gavaskar.

I was a ball boy at the Wankhede during the 1987 World Cup. My interest in cricket really took root after we won the 1983 World Cup, and for an aspiring youngster, to be at the ground during the next edition of the Cup and watch his heroes from close quarters was an unforgettable experience.

What made it even more special was when he called me to the Indian dressing room and introduced me to the team’s superstars. I had just entered my teens and couldn’t believe my eyes. These were the men I adored, and here I was, shaking hands with them.

Goodbye Ganguly?

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
His week could see the end of an unforgettable era, with Sourav Ganguly “set to quit” international cricket if not selected for the Australia series. The team for the first two tests will be chosen on Wednesday.

If Ganguly, 112 short of 7,000 Test runs, does retire, he would be the first of India's ‘Fab Five’ — the others being Sachin Tendulkar, Anil Kumble, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman — to call it a day, bringing to a close what has been Indian cricket’s most dramatic chapter.

Sources close to the former India skipper told HT Ganguly’s mind was made up. “He said there is no point in trying to make yet another comeback after this,” said the source. “He has nothing to prove to anyone anymore.” Ganguly, who had not spoken to (or been spoken to) by any selector in the recent fortnight since his axing from the Irani Cup squad, was philosophical.

Jaipur beat Mumbai, help Delhi reach semis

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Mumbai are hosting the climax of the inaugural IPL tournament, but they may have been shut out of their own party.

On Monday, an unbeaten sixth wicket stand of 69 runs between Niraj Patel and Ravindra Jadeja took Jaipur to a nail-biting last-ball win.

Even in the beginning of the league, Sachin Tendulkar's forced absence, compounded by Harbhajan Singh's ouster after 'Slapgate', had Mumbai reeling. Only after the Little Master returned that the team hit a purple patch and nurtured hopes of a final-four showing.

Before Monday's contest, with their fate hinging on the outcome of the last two matches, the one team Mumbai would have desperately wanted to avoid was Shane Warne's Jaipur Unbeaten in the fortress of the Sawai Man Singh stadium all tournament, Jaipur cut down Mumbai and confirmed that Delhi, on 15 points, entered the semis.

On sale today: 77 stars, for $40 million

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
ON WEDNESDAY, a Bollywood badshah and several captains of industry will be among those bidding hundreds of thousands of dollars for the services of 77 star cricketers in a sporting auction never seen before in India.

Auctions for eight Indian Premier League T20 teams will be held at a Mumbai five-star for 12 hours starting 11 am. Five players accorded "icon" status will not be auctioned. They will get 15 per cent more than the highest-priced player in their team. The icons are: Sachin Tendulkar (Mumbai), Souray Ganguly (Kolkata), Rahul Dravid (Bangalore), Yuvraj Singh (Chandigarh) and Virender Sehwag (Delhi). Viru joined the elite group on Tuesday after all IPL franchisees agreed to Delhi team-owner GMR's request that he be made their icon.

The auction will be conducted by English auctioneer Richard Madley behind closed doors at the
Hilton Towers in Nariman Point. No one apart from icons Dravid and Ganguly (the rest are in Australia) will be allowed in. Franchisees can spend up to $5 million on their buys. Players will be contracted for three years. Based on the lines of the NBA draft, the players have been divided into eight batches for the auction. Lots A, B, C and D are made up of top-rung players. Set E has wicketkeepers, F al1rounders, G batsmen, and H bowlers. There are 25 Indians,
