Vijender Singh has added another glorious chapter to Indian sports after assuring the country its first-ever medal in the World Boxing Championship. After bagging the bronze in Beijing, the Bhiwani boxer had said that winning a medal in the Olympics was not the end of the road for him and that he was hungry for more.

In an exclusive interview with the Hindustan Times after his quarterfinal bout, Vijender spoke about his latest achievement and the semifinal bout on September 11.

Excerpts: Now that you are assured of a World Championship medal, what's the feeling like? Winning medals for the country give sportspersons the greatest satisfaction. The championship is not over yet and I have a semifinal bout coming up. So, I am concentrating on that rather than celebrating.

Women defy odds to stay in hunt

India will be in line for a T20 title, after all. M.S. Dhoni and his boys may have crashed out after losing both to the West Indies and England in the Super 8s,but it has been a happier tale for the women.

Jhulan Goswami’s side booked a slot in the last four of the first Women’s World T20 on Monday with a tense five-wicket win over Sri Lanka at Taunton. In the process they overcame a wobbly batting line-up and the side’s relative inexperience in the T20 format. Before the tournament, India had played only two T20 matches over more than two years, winning one and losing the other.They started with a loss to England but beat Pakistan and Sri lanka since.

Their preparation for the World T20 was also hit by the BCCI’s decision to scrap this year’s domestic T20 tournament for the women,

Jaipur beat Mumbai, help Delhi reach semis

Mumbai are hosting the climax of the inaugural IPL tournament, but they may have been shut out of their own party.

On Monday, an unbeaten sixth wicket stand of 69 runs between Niraj Patel and Ravindra Jadeja took Jaipur to a nail-biting last-ball win.


Even in the beginning of the league, Sachin Tendulkar's forced absence, compounded by Harbhajan Singh's ouster after 'Slapgate', had Mumbai reeling. Only after the Little Master returned that the team hit a purple patch and nurtured hopes of a final-four showing.

Before Monday's contest, with their fate hinging on the outcome of the last two matches, the one team Mumbai would have desperately wanted to avoid was Shane Warne's Jaipur Unbeaten in the fortress of the Sawai Man Singh stadium all tournament, Jaipur cut down Mumbai and confirmed that Delhi, on 15 points, entered the semis.
