Dhoni gets his figures right

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
If cricket is about problem solving, Mahendra Singh Dhoni seems to have all the answers at the moment. Ahead of the final, Dhoni had said that winning the toss was 60% of the job done, and putting 270 on the board increased the chances of success to 80%. His batsmen went one better, posting 319 for five, a score that has never been successfully chased at the R Premadasa Stadium. Kumar Sangakkara's team was unable to rewrite history, succumbing to 273 and defeat by 46 runs.

For the ninth time under Dhoni, India had emerged victors in a limited-overs episode. There was nothing certain about this outcome, especially in the light of India's thrashing at Lanka's hands on Saturday. But resilience has not been in short supply in this group.

Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid set the tone with an unhurried 95-run stand. Dhoni then took the game into his hands, walking out at No. 3, as Tendulkar ground the bowling.

Win hearts of Tamils, Lankan prez tells troops

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
At Wednesday's national victory parade to celebrate the defeat of the LTTE, it was difficult to say which was more martial in nature — the military hardware on display or President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s speech which had a liberal sprinkling of victory, defeat, terrorists, terrorism and motherland.

“Terrorists are no more invincible. It is only you, the valiant troops and our Motherland that are invincible. I recently went down on my knees and worshipped the glorious motherland that obtained its freedom through the sacrifice of the lives of thousands of our heroic troops,’’ Rajapaksa said.

He told troops that it was now time to win over the hearts of the Tamils who should be able to live without “fear and mistrust”.

United Progressive Alliance pads up for slog overs

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
The Murky backroom battle to gain control of India see-sawed all of Sunday as the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) appeared to be just two short of the 272 votes it needs - before Prime Minister Manmohan Singh comes to the Lok Sabha on Monday to move a one-line motion to seek the House's confidence in his council of ministers.

But victory is not certain. The Opposition numbers at midnight on Sunday stood at 266, just four short of the UPA's figures as hectic meetings continued into the night. The Congress tried to keep its flock intact by asking party leaders - also deputed to snatch Opposition MPs - to host dinners, breakfasts and lunches.

The numbers game will continue its roller-coaster ride over the next two days. As the debate before the trust vote unfolds over at least 16 hours, one member parties and MPs are out to strike it rich or push their pet projects either through the UPA or the Opposition (graphic).

Sam Bahadur , The Legend, Passes Away

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Field Marshal Sarn Manekshaw, who led India to victory in the 1971 India Pakistan war, passed away late on Thursday.

Manekshaw, 94, India's first field marshal, undergoing treatment in the hospital in Wellington, Tamil Nadu, had slipped into coma on Wednesday evening.

Fondly called Sam Bahadur because of his close association with the Gorkha Rifies, Manekshaw was suffering from pulmonary fibrosis, a condition in which the air sacs of the lungs become replaced by fibrotic tissue affecting the ability to transfer oxygen into the bloodstream. A team of doctors from the army was supervising his treatment.
